Despite being recognized in some quarters for his contributions to the understanding of race relations in the Americas and elsewhere in Caste, Class, and Race (1948), Oliver C. Cox (1901–1974) remains largely unacknowledged for his pioneering work in what would later be known as world‐system theory which he presented in three works, The Foundations of Capitalism (1959), Capitalism and American Leadership (1962), and Capitalism as a System (1964). From his chronicle of the origins and structure of the capitalist world economy, Cox concluded that, contra Marx, only the working classes of the colonized world were truly revolutionary as they did not have the opportunity to exploit any other class.
