In contrast to the persistent public expressions of anxiety about femininity and how women might change as a result of their wartime experiences, only rarely was ‘ manliness’ or ‘manhood’-masculinity, as such-the focus of debate and scrutiny. Public attention was directed to the cultural meanings of manhood only when something happened that challenged deeply held and taken-for-granted ideas about male-female differences.1
