Displacement, the silences of histories, the complexities of double identity, the longing for ‘elsewhere’, and the attempts at coherence in experience have become focusing themes of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Chandra’s starting point is her own family’s history of double displacement. The first displacement was as indentured labourers brought from India to Fiji, under British colonial rule, to work the sugar plantations in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Chandra’s work not only draws on anthropological notions of cultural explication concerning identity, memory, social and cultural reproduction and continuity. It is situated on the more experimental edges of both anthropology and history through reinserting the subjective into a consideration and exploration of human cultural experience to expressive effect.
