Good-Time’ Girls

The nation was depicted as one in which ‘ the people’ were sacrificing their private pleasures and individual interests and concerns and devoting themselves to the war effort. It is not surprising, then, that self-interestedness or selfishness came to be portrayed as antithetical to the wartime spirit. For some selfishness during the war became the epitome of sin. Canon A. Linwood Wright, Vicar of St Mark’s, Leicester, wrote for example, ‘We must root out all selfishness, for it is destructive of com munity life. The power to achieve victory does not lie primarily in money, men or machinery but in the enthusiasm and will to accept total responsibility with total sacrifice-to give and not to count the cost.’
