Spanish—Issues in Applied Phonology, Phonetics, and Pronunciation

This entry introduces the reader to critical issues and themes in Spanish applied phonology, phonetics, and pronunciation. The article begins with a description of the sounds and main suprasegmental features of Spanish. Given the spread and influence of Spanish all over the world, the article also provides an overview of differences between dialects of Spanish, focusing on those that carry strong social values for both native and second language speakers. The final sections summarize the areas of Spanish pronunciation that prove challenging for second language learners and present an overview of recent research in this area, including findings from different contexts where pronunciation can be learned (classroom, study abroad, and technology‐mediated environments).
