Hadrian's Panhellenion

This chapter discusses networks as power mechanisms, with particular reference to the Greek cities within the Roman Empire. It explores the activities of the network in light of the limits of Castels&s;s theory on the bipolar Self-Network. The chapter examines the processes of the organization of the Panhellenion by the emperor himself, as an example of a network of cities aiming to achieve targets which were widely spread in the eastern provinces of the empire. The concept of Hellenicity was directly connected with education and the acceptance of Greek culture and way of life. Constantine Porphyrogenitos spoke of the Roman sagene in terms of absolute authority and power. The practices of self-assessment of the network&s;s active members become important. For instance, how the Thyatireans presented themselves in the decree from the Athenian Acropolis and how they defined their identity through their participation in the Panhellenion can illustrate this interplay between the Self and the Network as a bidirectional relationship.
