Politics and the Good

This chapter argues, contrary to some leading versions of political liberalism, that considerations of excellence have a legitimate place in political ethics, and even in the most plausible grounding of the civil rights that most concern liberals. It defends the pursuit of excellence from charges that it must offend against a reasonable egalitarianism. It argues also for a type of separation of church and state, and for contextually sensitive state action to promote and protect widely recognized goods involving excellence.
