Pliny the Elder has been seen by many critics as an emblematic figure of the Flavian Age. This chapter considers a few acts of reception that draw with particularly directness on the Vesuvius letters. The tendency of modern writers has been to strip away the attempts of the nephew to lionize his own conduct in the Vesuvius letters. The modern discovery and subsequent excavation of the buried city, along with its less celebrated neighbors, has proven a boon for Roman archeologists and ancient historians. Pompeii has proven to be much more than this: the site itself, in conjunction with the catastrophic volcanic eruption that gave rise to it, has exerted a singular hold on the modern imagination. The chapter looks at three continental works of fiction that make use of the site of Pompeii, Germaine de Stael's Corinne, ou l'Italie, Theophile Gautier's Arria Marcella, and William Jensen's novella Gradiva.
