Pragmatic markers are essential linguistic elements in the communicative process because of their dual role in the architecture of cognition and interaction. Their complex and synergic essence can only be ascertained in relation to factors such as prosody. Selection of pragmatic markers by speakers depends on several communicative conditions: appropriateness, the status of the language users, and the use of the marker in a given context. In other words, the speaker must decide on the appropriateness of a specific pragmatic marker depending on the context and the audience. In sum, pragmatic markers are a fundamental topic for research and description in applied linguistics as they are associated with many of the features that underlie the communicative process.
