Colonialism and Modernity

On 19 February 1933, the Messaggero di Rodi , the principal newspaper of the colony, celebrated the tenth anniversary of Mario Lago’s tenure as governor. Normally a modest publication of four pages, the Messagero celebrated the occasion with a thirty-page bumper edition, adorned with a large portrait of Lago on the cover. The central theme of this special commemorative issue was the metamorphosis of Rhodes. 1 The Messaggero boasted: Since the Conference of Lausanne one can say the following of the Italian presence among these islands: it does not seem a presence of a mere ten years, but a century of change.... Rhodes of today has completely altered in appearance, in its life and in its activities. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
