Geography Education

Geography was one of the first subjects taught in primary and secondary education, along with reading and mathematics. From those curricular roots, the role of geography in primary and secondary schools globally has largely been influenced by European education, especially during the expansive colonial periods of European countries. At times geography has experienced periods of immense popularity and at other times it has taken a backseat within primary and secondary education. This entry reviews trends and discusses the current state of the discipline's role in primary and secondary education. Geography's inclusion in the social studies curriculum in the United States was a major change during the twentieth century, and similar changes are occurring in the curricula of other countries in the twenty‐first century. Geo‐educators are working to maintain an equitable presence with other core subjects of the social studies curriculum. National examinations that include geography provide the discipline with a necessary presence. Geospatial technology provides an entry to the use of geography by students both in and outside school. Rigorous content courses such as Advanced Placement Human Geography (APHG) and the International Baccalaureate (IB) have also helped to raise the academic profile of geography in primary and secondary education.
