A l'origine, il s'agissait d'une conférence mondaine devant le Club maintenant en 1947. Dans cet essai, Sartre définit sa conception de la philosophie existentialiste. Après avoir distingué deux courants existentialistes, l'un chrétien, l'autre athée, dont lui-même se réclame, Sartre part d'une définition de base : "l'existence précède l'essence".
