Group Dynamics in a North Indian Village

The concept of faction is not new to the study of the Indian village. Several anthropologists have used the term, but they offer no specific definition or conceptualization of the phenomenon. In general, factions are found where there is a difference in methods or in ends among a number of social groups. It is particularly interesting to look into the working of this social phenomenon in India where social groups are highly structured. Both castes and factions are social groups and it will be worthwhile to see how the two affect and overlap each other, especially since Independence. The latter has brought a completely new conception of power and freedom to the Indian villager. It remains to be seen, however, how far the caste system has been able to localize and channelize extra-community forces and in what ways it has been reorganizing in the face of this new situation
