The Middle Eastern extended family has long been a controversial subject. A relatively sparse and largely antiquated body of data has been the source of often speculative and sometimes contradictory assertions. In two recent volumes, for instance, the functional and functioning extended family is seen as a continuing reality in one1 and a long lost fictitious ideal in the other.2
