The Indian Reorganization Act and Federal Withdrawal

American anthropologists have been mainly concerned with studying Indians, since America has supplied abundant Indians but no other primitives for them to study. In the United States, a minute Indian minority is cooped up on reservations where it can be studied easily – an ethnic laboratory of nearly 300 tribes. Reams of literature have been written about aboriginal patterns, yet when the Indian Bureau announces that its long-term policy is one of withdrawal of federal supervision of Indians, anthropologists are largely unaware of the significance of this statement
