The 'Problem of Evil' in the Context of Ancestral Intervention in the Affairs of the Living in Africa

A consideration of ancestral intervention with reference to 'good' and 'evil' simply confirms the essential insolubility of the problem of evil. If this moral framework is transmuted into sociological categories, the activity of different types of ancestor can be analysed in terms of a distinction between constituting and allocating agents. Not only does this make more sense of what ancestors do, but it emphasises the complementary character of their interaction, both among themselves and with other mystical agents. Thus it draws ancestral intervention within the ambit of a more general and basic social process
