The culture of the Wape, a people living in the Torricelli mountains and Aitape foothills, is characterized by relatively uniform adult male status. This paper analyzes the cultural constructs and practices that support and maintain Wape egalitarianism, including ecological, economic, ritual and kinship factors. The implications of these findings are briefly explored for their relationship to newly introduced activities and modes of behavior
