Social Status, Mobility, Illegitimacy and Subsequent Marriage

The purpose of this study was to determine the relative importance of variables surrounding (1) illegitimacy and (2) the time interval between unwed motherhood and subsequent marriage. The data were based on responses obtained from 1,625 women in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The factors found to be related significantly to illegitimacy were age at marriage, educational attainment, father's social status, husband's social status, and mobility. Measures of religion were not found to be significant. Social status of women (as measured by father's occupation) appeared to be the most significant background factor related to illegitimacy. Moreover, the data suggested the bearing of an illegitimate child has important consequences for the mother's social mobility, as measured by attained education and, more particularly, as measured by social status of the husband. The variables under consideration appeared to be related to the time lapse before marriage in the same way they were related to illegitimacy. However, since the statistical tests for the time interval were not significant, the results remain merely suggestive for future investigations. The present research suggests cross-cultural comparisons can throw light on the topics of illegitimacy and subsequent marriage
