This article stems from an interest in producing a comparable database for the metropolitan regions of Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. During the course of the research, it became clear that achieving this objective would require explaining the technical processes and political competencies that, in Brazil and Argentina, gave rise to specific ways of producing information on crime. The study highlights the particular conjunctures that led, in each case, to official crime data becoming the object of political disputes, and to the existence of intra- and inter-institutional conflicts. These were also matters that fed "public opinion" when the debate on public security rose in the ranking of the public agenda. This approach allows us to conclude that the figures speak more about the institutions that produced them than about crime or the situation of violent deaths in the metropolitan regions of Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. Therefore, this article will present how these data, in order to be considered comparable between metropolitan regions as close and as distant as Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, needed to be (de)composed and (dis)aggregated in order to be compared and read as indicators of violent forms of conflict resolution
