This article examines the Southern Cariban languages (e.g., Bakairi, Ikpeng, Ingarikó) in detail, providing a reconstruction of Proto-Southern Cariban and exploring its relationship to other Cariban branches. The authors argue for a closer relationship between Southern Cariban and Northern Cariban, challenging previous classifications that linked Southern Cariban more closely with other branches like Southern Guiana. They present extensive comparative data on phonology, morphology, and lexicon, demonstrating regular sound correspondences and shared morphological innovations. The study contributes significantly to the understanding of Cariban language history and classification, offering a revised subgrouping model and highlighting the importance of Southern Cariban for reconstructing Proto-Cariban
