Il existe de nombreux stereotypes a propos des Indiens d'Amerique, mais le proverbe le seul bon indien est un indien mort est une invective particulerement odieuse. Elle a ete utilise aux Etats Unis des 1860, et son origine a ete attribuee au General Philip Sheridan. L'histoire de ce proverbe, sa dissemination, son sens et ses variations sont retracees jusqu'a aujourd'hui, de maniere a montrer qu'il est utilise avec une frequence etonnante aussi bien dans la litterature americaine et dans les mass media que dans le langage parle
