I N April 1838, Joao Francisco Cabucu', a retired army lieutenant, found himself in jail (along with nearly three thousand others) for complicity in the Sabinada rebellion. Rebels-radical liberals and army and militia officers in the city of Salvador, Bahia, had mobilized several thousand people aind had survived a fourmonth siege (November 1837 to March 1838) before being overwhelmed by an equally large governi-ment army that took the city by storm. Cabuoci petitioned a senator to speed his release. He glossed over his failure to leave the city, as the government had ordered all officers and civil servants to do (fate, he wrote, caused him to stay), but he distanced himself from those he considered the principal supporters of the revolt, explaining: Truly the revolution was not initiated by the rabble, but in the end the canaille dictated the law and the blacks with their battalions terrified all.'
