Extended Kinship Ties in Malaysia

Drawing upon a sample of 1007 households, the present study has attempted to examine the significance of kinship networks in Malaysia. Through the investigation of frequency of kin contact, and actual help seeking behaviour the persistence and reinforcement of kinship solidarity and dependence amongst the sample households were measured. These were compared with the findings of previous theoretical and empirical studies conducted elsewhere. With respect to, for example, personal problems, illness, finance and caring for children, there was evidence of kinship support, thus suggesting the prevalence of wider kin family networks in Malaysia. An overall high rate of kinship contacts and obligations was found both upper and lower economic sections of the population
