Authority is a defining attribute of Pospisil's concept of law but is not central in some other treatments. The Lisu villagers of Ban Lum do not resolve disputes by means of decisions of authorities. Two cases are described to illustrate the negotiation process of dispute resolution, and the factors which lead to or preclude a decision are discussed. Since disputes in this social group are resolved without authorities (a) they have no law (by Pospisil's criteria), (b) authority is not a necessary component of law and Pospisil's characterization is inadequate, or (c) Pospisil's concept of law can be retained with a very peculiar idea of authority. I argue in favor of the second alternative and suggest that other concepts of law such as those developed by Hart and Gulliver, which do not rely on the universality of authority, are more adequate
