Farm Labor and Family Cycle in Traditional Korea and Japan

As people who share a common origin, an indebtedness to the Chinese great tradition, and an agricultural economy based on the intensive cultivation of irrigated rice on family farms, the Koreans and Japanese would be expected to have very similar patterns of domestic organization. While traditional rural households in the two countries do share broad organizational similarities, they differ decisively in lineality, patterns of family fission, and patterns of inheritance. The different patterns of fission are related to different degrees of urbanization in the two countries during traditional times. Remaining in a joint family for an extended period was rational for nonsucceeding sons in Korea, but less so in Japan. Thus, the typological difference between the patterns of fission of traditional rural Korean and Japanese households is a result of economic conditions that made different fission strategies rational in the two countries
