The Concept of Remarriage among Israeli War Widows

A sample of Israeli war widows held differing concepts of remarriage, (i) a second first marriage, modelled on the same kind of romantic attachment as the first marriage, (ii) a remedial marriage, designed to repair the damage to the family; or (iii) a postponed marriage, entered into after the obligations of the first marriage were fulfilled. Many relationships with potential marriage partners did not result in remarriage because of conflicting concepts of remarriage held by the partners to the relationship. The question of relative freedom of choice in first marriage and remarriage is discussed in the light of the widows' expressed opinions that remarriage is complicated and different from first marriage
