Based on the theoretical and meth-odological background of my doctoral thesis in his-torical anthropology (Frehse 2004), this paper aimsat reflecting on ethnography’s potentialities for theanthropological study of historical issues. Its specificpurpose is exploring the potentialities of an ethnog-raphy of the São Paulo central streets between thebeginning of the 19th and the beginning of the 20thcentury. In order to emphasize these potentialities,the discussion follows in two steps. First I theoreti-cally develop the thesis that ethnography may alsobe present in anthropological studies of historical is-sues as it is permeated with a specific epistemologicalperspective: the ethnographic perspective. With theaim of testifying to the consistency of the argument,I evaluate the presence of ethnography in my owndoctoral study. It will then be possible to highlightthat ethnographic perspective has theoretical, meth-odological and literary potentialities notwithstand-ing ethnography’s unavoidable limitations for theanthropological study of historical issues
