This article endeavours to delineate the processes that led young Italian and French musicians to present themselves as the advocates of causes linked to the history of the local settings within which they were born. This analysis highlights how these militant vocations originally sprang from processes of identification with rap or reggae music. Thus, it is this very attempt to appropriate transnational models, originally hailing from as far afield as Jamaica or New York, which have fostered the promotion of regional dialects or drawn out "the red thread of communist memory
