The problems arising from the linkage of census name data in historical demographic studies are explored with particular attention to studies of migration. The problems are illustrated using nineteenth-century data from the Saguenay region of Quebec Canada. This article describes the methods used in this semi-automatic linkage discusses certain problems inherent in all mobility studies whether computerized or not and makes a comparative examination of some of the results obtained about extraregional emigration.
