M. Abeles - Power and Society among the Ochollo of Southern Ethiopia. The Ochollo of Gamo are a stateless and classless society with a complicated political organisation. Residential divisions are governed by assemblies 'chaired' by title-holders (halaka) whose political power is more or less balanced or complemented by the ritual power of the sacrificers (ka'o). While any citizen can eventually become a halaka, ka'o must belong to specifie lineages. There is a permanent tension between the two groups neither of which have been able to acquire a political hegemony, the citizens' assembly remaining in control of village affairs
