T HERE IS now a growing recognition by social scientists and American society at large that ethnicity is still a significant force in American social and political life.' Ethnicity that concept used to encompass an individual's subjective identification with a larger collective group on basis of commonalities of race, religion, or nationality, as well as categoric description of a group based on these characteristics appears to have regained prominence as an important factor for analysis since racial crises of 1960s. As one author has observed, crisis of race present in contemporary America has opened again whole problem of ethnic groups and ethnic relations in American society.'2 The increasing attention ethnicity has been receiving in both academic and popular journals is in marked contrast to attention paid to this subject in recent decades. In this respect, many would agree that ethnic studies in social sciences declined considerably after 1940s. A writer commenting on state of ethnic studies in sociology could well be addressing his comments to political science profession when he states, the . . . profession assumed for three decades (1940-1960) that ethnicity was not a relevant variable... .3 A review of International Political Science Abstracts is revealing of this neglect for, in period 1949 to 1971, only seven articles on ethnicity and ethnic voting appeared in journals indexed by this periodical. The oversight of ethnicity in American life over recent decades has been primarily attributed to assimilationist ideologies present in this society vis a vis its ethnic groups.4 In political science, we see influence of this assimilationist
