In this article I argue that massive soundplay involving the name Medea in the opening verses of Euripides' tragedy may signal a special status for the heroine, perhaps even divinity (I compare the threefold invocation of a deity). In this way, the beginning of the play seems to anticipate Medea's divine or quasi-divine stature in the finale
