Miscegenation and Personal Choice in Two Twentieth-Century Novels of Continental Spanish America

An exhaustive study of the Negro in the whole of Spanish American literature updoubtedly would prove to be a rewarding though formidable undertaking. R. Sayers' and G. R. Coulthard2 have, respectively, published books on the Negro as a literary theme in Brazil before 1888, and on the theme of race and color in the literature of the West Indies. Gregory Rabassa3 continued one phase of Sayer's work in a dissertation at Columbia in 1954 on the Negro in Brazilian fiction since 1888, recognizing at the same time the existence of ample material for a similar study of the Negro in the Spanish American novel of the current century. To complete a thorough study while attempting to examine the novels of all the Spanishspeaking countries as well as those of Brazil would be impossible, he concedes, since this literary form has been cultivated to a very great extent in all countries where there is a Negro population. Unfortunately, there is yet to appear a study encompassing Latin American, Spanish American, or even just Spanish American literature of the mainland, which would be comparable to the efforts of Sayers, Coulthard, or Rabassa, although there was one ray of hope in 1962 when a report of some research in progress in this area was published.4
