Mitos nacionalistas e identidades étnicas

Conforme más y más jóvenes indígenas pasan por el sistema educativo formal y logran obtener posiciones profesionales como agrónomos, maestros, médicos, abogados etc., ha surgido una elite intelectual indígena en varios países latinoamericanos que se está transformando en la fibra vital de las nuevas organizaciones.Los intelectuales indígenas están involucrados activamente en desarrollar el "nuevo discurso indígena" que otorga a estas organizaciones su legitimidad y sus identidades distintivas.No solamente se ocupan de formular la agenda política de sus movimientos, también redescubren sus raíces históricas, se preocupan por la lengua, la cultura y la cosmología, y se involucran activamente en "inventar tradiciones" y construir nuevas "comunidades imaginadas".En la medida en que la nueva intelligentsia indígena participa en redes nacionales e internacionales y logra difundir su mensaje hacia otros sectores de la población, y en la medida en que es capaz de movilizar recursos y obtener cierta cantidad de "bienes colectivos" (recursos materiales y políticos, reconocimiento público y legal, etc.), los intelectuales indígenas se han transformado en vínculos indispensables en el proceso de organización y movilización
