Bundu, a precolonial Muslim polity located in what is now eastern Senegal, played a major role in the development of commerce in Senegambia in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Strategically placed between the Senegal and Gambia rivers, Bundu served as a major staging area through which the gold of neighboring Bambuk and slaves from Segu and Kaarta flowed westward, in exchange for European goods. A focus for competition between French and British trading interests, Bundu was also a major source of cotton and sustenance for the entire Senegambia region. Although it was a regional economic power, Bundu is better recognized as the state founded in 1698 by the Torodbe cleric Malik Sy. Composed of Malinke, Soninke, and Wolof elements, over which a Fulbe nobility ruled, Bundu was also an important source of recruits for the jihad of al-Hajj 'Umar in the midnineteenth century. Towards the end of the same century, Bundu became the major battlefield upon which the reformer Mamadu Lamine waged jihad against the French. The present article attempts to trace the development of Bundu in the eighteenth century, for it was during this period that Bundu emerged from an obscure grouping of villages into a sovereign government of some significance. It was also at this time that the commercial nature of the state began to take shape. The data for the first three-fourths of the century are meager. Much of the material concerning Malik Sy, entirely oral in nature, fails to extend beyond Malik Sy's successor, Bubu Malik Sy.1 Of that which does, Andre' Ranccon remains the fullest and most reliable source.2 There are some archival materials
