Cicero's De Republica 3.16 refers to a ban on the cultivation by Transalpinae gentes of vineyards and oliveyards. Various explanations of the ban have been advanced, citing considerations of national interest (Paterson, Tchernia) or imperialist goals (Frank, Badi ́n). This paper proposes a new, fiscalist interpretation: the aim of the ban was to protect the very large revenues flowing to the Roman treasury from the transit duty levied on Italian wine in Gaul
