IN Scotland, the glory of Humanism belonged, not to limited circles of Court or University wits, but to the educated part of the nation above all; and this was pre-eminently due to her teachers of youth, thanks to whom the movement was broadly extended. If the full-scale Renaissance, whose very existence in Scotland has been disputed, arrived there somewhat latea perennial characteristic of Spring in those latitudesit ultimately burst into an efflorescence of wonderful extent considering the size of the country, and deserving more recognition than the last two centuries have accorded it
