"Hamlet" and Suetonius

VERY few literary works have received more scholarly attention than Hamlet. The study of what is generally considered Shakespeare's greatest play began within a few years after it appeared on the stage; and, especially within the last century, the number of critical editions, monographs, and journal articles has reached the dimensions of a veritable flood.' Much time and labour have been spent on the text and the relative values of the various editions; but perhaps, with modern psychology in the field, it is the character of Hamlet with its strange problems and inconsistencies which has attracted most attention. Even the greatest scholars are not free of the charge of having treated Hamlet as a real person; they have analyzed and psychoanalyzed his personality, forgetting that after all he is but a character in a play. Such treatment, if mistaken, is at least a great tribute to Shakespeare's skill at characterization
