THE MOST IMPORTANT event of 1959 for the classical scholar, the publication of the Dyscolus, realizes the dream of the renaissance editor Hertel, who is said to have offered a year of his life for the pleasure of reading a complete play of Menander's. The circumstances attending the discovery of the Dyscolus papyrus are unfortunately shrouded in obscurity; but, whatever the details, there is cause for thankfulness that the precious sheets were secured by the Swiss collector Martin Bodmer, who entrusted their publication to Professor Victor Martin of Geneva.
