In his Antiquitates Romanae Dionysius of Halicarnassus used “theology” to evaluate the veracity of the “myths” he encountered in the Roman historical tradition. This use of “theology” testifies to Dionysius' consistency as a thinker, distinguishes him from contemporary ancient historians, and illustrates the importance of the intellectual dimension of Greek and Roman religions
