Socialism Out of the Common Pots

During my visit to India this summer, many of my Marxist politician friends asked me whether in the West socialism was universally believed to be dead. They sounded worried, and understandably so. With East meeting West in Europe, and 1992 looming large, the radicals of the Third World felt apprehensive about their international allies. The issue as they saw it was no longer whether to be Pro-Chinese or Pro-Russian, but whether to hold on to the principles of socialism at the risk of being called old-fashioned or to accept the so-called 'inevitable' march of the market economy and be hailed as avant garde. In the middle of such despondence, I have also encountered dynamic searches for alternative economic strategies in India and in many other parts of the Third World. These visions of alternative strategies came not from the mainstream Marxist socialist movement but from the networks of vulnerable and casualized women workers
