TEIIS SUFFIX is usually considered to be a modification of the suffixed possessive particle -za, viz. nixa, the n being originally developed to avoid the hiatus between the vocalic endings of the verb and the suffiX.2 If, however, the suffix -ta were added to a vocalic ending, as would normally be the case (cf. Ethiopic -a after all vowels, Arabic -za after long vowels, Akkadian -a regularly after i and sometimes after other vowels), there would be no hiatus. The accusative suffix is apparently -nt (the n being an essential part of the suffix) not connected originally with the possessive suffix -za, -z. There is no evidence for a form -nzza except in Arabic, where the older forms -nita, pausal -nzza -r^zzah occur.3 In view of the fact that in Ethiopic -nzita should appear as -rweta (cf. neguseta < negqistuza or negZust-a) and that in Akkadian -za is regularly preserved after i, it is best to regard the Arabic forms as modifications of original nz on the analogy of -ta. The use of this particle -nz does not seem to be confined to the expression of the direct object of a verb, but is apparently found in other constructions. It occurs as the suffis of certain quasiverbal particles; in Arabic in laiscl-ns ' except me ' in which it is apparently subject or predicate;4
