Les sources historiques d'Asie Centrale de la dynastie Ouzbeke (XVIe-XIXe s.) decrivent le naqīb comme un haut fonctionnaire administratif, charge de hautes responsabilites militaires et comme l'une des places les plus honorees lors des ceremonies des cours des khans. Plusieurs titulaires de ce titre etaient des descendants de Sayyid Ata, personnage saint Soufi du XIVe s. auquel on attribue traditionellement un role central dans l'islamisation du Jochid ulus. L'auteur etudie la nature de ce rang et des droits hereditaires de ces descendants et le role de ce titre dans l'utilisation politique de l'islamisation dans les etats d'Asie Interieure
