Negation in Chinese

This is a study of the syntactic and semantic properties of negation in two Chinese dialects, Mandarin and Amoy. The distinction between contrary and contradictory negation in the environment of state verbs calls for the postulation of negative prefix in Chinese. Evidence is given for analysing surface VP-negation as the realisation of underlying sentence negation. Further, sentence negation is distinguished from sentence denial or refutation, which must be understood in a well-delimited discourse. Different surface positionings of the negative marker are associated with varying scopes of negation in the underlying configurations
