No single matter of chronology has been examined so thoroughly as the date of death of Jesus of Nazareth. It is chronology's premier topic. The aim of this paper is not to propose a new date. All agree that only a handful of days in the late 20s and early 30s of the first century C.E. qualify. These dates have all been defended at one time or another. Rather, the paper is about a remarkable change of direction in past research on the topic. By the early twentieth century, 29 C.E. had been almost universally accepted as the year best supported by the sources. But more recently, it has come to be almost universally dismissed. The problem is an obstacle pertaining to the day. This paper's principal aim is to reverse this development. 29 C.E. can be restored to its former status by showing that the obstacle raised against it is based on one of ancient history's most overrated assumptions, namely that lunar months typically cannot begin before the first crescent is sighted. As to the day of the event, only 18 March and 15 April are candidates in 29 C.E. 18 March is preferred. But there is less support in the sources for 18 March as the day than for 29 C.E. as the year. The line of argument presented in this paper naturally leads to ca. 3:00 p.m. on 18 March 29 C.E. as the most likely time of the event
