Some Observations on Non-Final Stress in Turkish

In this paper a number of exceptions to the usual rules of stress assignment in Turkish words are examined. All of them share the property that the normal word-final stress of Turkish is displaced toward the beginning of the word. It is concluded that all the cases investigated constitute syntactically or semantically marked categories, and that there appears to be a correlation between this markedness and the phonologically marked phenomenon of non-final stress which characterizes the forms in question
