Following the Leader

The following is an investigation of the narratives of ‘Abd al-Qadir that were embodied and represented in British, French and Algerian literary production, biographies and iconography, and to examine why the figure of ‘Abd al-Qadir had such strong appeal within countries whose interests often directly competed. This study is not concerned with the validity of any particular interpretation of ‘Abd al-Qadir's personal or political life. Rather, it seeks to uncover how and why these interpretations emerged and were transformed over time and space. Cultural and symbolic interpretations of ‘Abd al-Qadir have proved tremendously flexible in their ability to fit separate and often contradictory national myths. The ‘Abd al-Qadir narrative was adapted to fit competing ‘myths of election’ developed by France and Britain for the purpose of justifying their respective colonial projects, and it was later adapted to fit Algeria's ‘myth of foundation’. A close reading of French, British and Algerian cultural production in the context of international political history provides a window into the cultural expressions of these myths
