Democratisation reconsidered

The 1988–92 democratic interregnum in Algeria can only be understood if the Algerian state itself is deconstructed and attention is paid to the emergent groups inside it that, even before 1988, were challenging the assumptions on which the state itself was based. This can be seen in the struggle against the 1984 Family Code. Nor should the role of religion be underestimated in creating a climate where irreversible change took place, so that the 1992 coup can be seen as a preamble to democratic evolution in Algeria, not its demise, as new groups struggle with fragmented elites in attempting to establish hegemony over the political process
