This article examines a film trilogy by Moncef Dhouib in light of contemporary image production in Tunisian society. The analysis is based on a relation between the ideological production of the image by the state, on the one hand, and oppositional images of religious and mystical practices, on the other. The 'ideological' image is linked to the political situation from Bourguiba until the present time. The secular image is characterised, in content, by a forced visibility of the human body. The films of Moncef Dhouib were selected as an example of an oppositional image that is simultaneously resisting political and religious uses of visuality. Short summaries are provided given the difficulty of viewing the films both inside and outside Tunisia
