This article hypothesizes that the overly negative view of the music of the colonial period in Chile is rooted in the nationalistic ideology of the 19th and 20th centuries, which viewed that period as one of submission to a foreign power.It goes on to suggest that this ideology had a determining role in the creation of the dual image that has been attributed to the 18th century: it was considered to be far inferior to the republican era, but represented progress in comparison to previous centuries, given that from 1700 on, both Chile and Spain became, in a manner of speaking, less Spanish.This latter fact explains why 18th-century music in Spain was perceived to be decadent, given that Spanish nationalism viewed French and Italian infl uences negatively.The present study questions these traditional ideas through a revision of certain discourses and colonial documents
